Few cinemas in the world are as iconic or as talked about as Amsterdam’s now Royal Theater Tuschinski. This architectural gem opened its doors on 28 October 1921 and has since become a beloved cultural landmark in the heart of the city. To mark the ivory anniversary of this legendary film palace, Pathé and Dex joined forces. The result: Theater Tuschinski 100 Years—a monumental book full of memories, stories, and stunning photography.
The dream of Tuschinski
When Abraham Tuschinski pursued his dream in the early 20th century—to build the most beautiful theatre in Amsterdam—he could never have imagined the scale of his legacy. Theater Tuschinski became an icon. A place where premieres are celebrated, stories come alive, and generations are enchanted beneath glittering art deco lamps.
For the anniversary, Pathé wanted more than just a historical account. They wanted a book that would truly capture the soul of the building. Dex oversaw the entire process—from concept development and editorial coordination to design, production, and publication. The book was written by film journalist Robbert Blokland, photographed by Renske Derkx, and designed by carenza*. It was published under our own imprint, Kyosei, where it’s still available today.
Familiar voices, hidden stories
The book brings together personal reflections from Dutch public figures, employees, and lifelong fans. Mayor Femke Halsema calls the theatre “one of the greatest gifts ever given to the city”, while actor Barry Atsma says, “As a filmmaker, you’re already 10–0 ahead just by standing in Tuschinski.” Jeroen Krabbé, Joop van den Ende, Roxanne Hehakaija, and Fernando Halman also share their personal connections to this extraordinary place.
Beyond the stories, the book offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at the theatre’s restoration, technical features, and history. From projection rooms to painstakingly restored murals—every detail adds to the story of a building that is far more than just a cinema.
An evening of grandeur
On 14 October 2021, the book was launched in a festive event held in Theater Tuschinski’s grand auditorium. Hosted by film journalist René Mioch, the first copy was presented to actor Jeroen Krabbé. Creators, interviewees, film professionals, and cinema lovers came together to celebrate the magic of this iconic venue.
A story that resonated
The book drew wide acclaim in the media. Leading outlets including de Volkskrant, NRC, NOS, Het Parool, BNR, De Telegraaf, Filmkrant, and NPO Radio 1 all praised the publication. On 29 October 2021, the book was voted third in Humberto’s Non-fiction Book of the Month on NPO Radio 1.
A project to be proud of
For Dex, it was an honour to contribute to this project. To help tell the story of a place so full of meaning—in collaboration with partners who take craft and imagination as seriously as we do.
