Rotterdam is a city that breathes, evolves, and moves. That spirit is reflected in its music scene. Commissioned by Popunie and graphic designer Job Rompa, Dex had the honour of producing Rotterdam Popstad—a monumental book that brings 70 years of pop music history to life.
Written by musicologist and musician Remko van Bork, Rotterdam Popstad is a tribute to a city that always looks forward but knows its roots. With 550 pages, 360 images, and countless stories, the book serves as both a time capsule and a source of inspiration. It’s a richly illustrated celebration of artists, venues, records, protests, and audiences.
From rock & roll to hip-hop, from Lee Towers to Tramhaus
The book takes readers on a journey from the early waves of rock ’n’ roll and Indorock in the 1950s, through punk, new wave, house, and hip-hop, all the way to today’s music scene. Major names like Lee Towers, Paul Elstak, Davina Michelle, Ronnie Flex, and Winne share the stage with underground legends such as the Rondos and current acts like Tramhaus, Sevdaliza, and Kevin.
The spotlight also shines on legendary venues: Nighttown, Eksit, Waterfront, De Doelen, Rotown—each a stage where generations of Rotterdammers discovered and experienced music.
A book with rhythm, made with love
Producing a work of this scope required precision and care. Dex oversaw the entire process, from prepress to final delivery, ensuring that Job Rompa’s unique design language came through in every detail. From colour gradients to paper selection, from binding to finishing touches—everything contributes to the book’s distinctive feel.
The result is a solid hardcover edition that delights in every sense—visually, physically, and emotionally. It’s a book for music lovers and Rotterdammers alike. Open it once, and you won’t want to put it down.
Launched in style and with beats
Rotterdam Popstad was launched on 16 December 2024 during the Rotterdam Music Awards at Theater Zuidplein. In a festive ceremony, the first copy was presented to Paul Elstak—a true icon of the Rotterdam scene. Artists, programmers, and fans gathered to celebrate the city’s musical legacy.
A cultural tribute that keeps inspiring
To Dex, this book is more than just a publication. It’s a contribution to the cultural heritage of Rotterdam—a space where creators, venues, and fans come together. It shows how communication and culture can amplify each other—and how a book can connect, surprise, and enrich people.
