Recognizing and naming emotions does not come naturally to many children. In education, this can lead to misunderstandings, unrest and tension in the classroom. GGD Zuid-Holland Zuid identified a clear need for a practical tool: the Emotion Wheel. A fast and accessible tool that helps children recognize, name and understand their emotions. The Emotion Wheel supports children in communicating more effectively, understanding themselves and others, and regulating their emotions. In short, it provides a valuable foundation for healthy social-emotional development.
From challenge to solution
GGD Zuid-Holland Zuid is the regional public health service for South Holland South. From the perspective of positive health, it protects, monitors and promotes the health of residents, with special attention to vulnerable groups. When a question arose about the practical implementation of an emotion regulation tool for schools, GGD Zuid-Holland Zuid turned to Dex. The request was clear: think along about the execution and develop a workable, appealing tool for use in the classroom.
Acting quickly, creating together
Dex immediately got to work. Within a short timeframe, we developed several models and presented them to the GGD. By listening carefully, responding quickly and thinking practically, the idea soon evolved into a tangible product: the Emotion Wheel. A tool you can hold, turn and use. Not a theoretical concept, but an accessible, physical instrument that invites conversation and insight.
A practical tool with real impact
With the Emotion Wheel, GGD Zuid-Holland Zuid now has a concrete and applicable tool for schools. A carefully developed product that not only supports teachers and students, but also stimulates meaningful conversations and contributes to a safe and positive learning environment — seemingly small in form, yet with noticeable impact in the classroom.
