How do you make sure that people on a tight budget can still put something healthy, tasty and affordable on the table every day? For years, CVD (Centrum voor Dienstverlening) has shown that it’s possible with the Budgetreceptenkalender: a practical calendar filled with dishes costing less than €4 per person. A publication that not only nourishes, but also supports — positioned right at the intersection of communication and social impact. For several years now, we have been proud to contribute to the design and production of this meaningful and much-valued calendar.
A jubilee edition with a story
The 2026 edition is extra special: it marks the 10th edition of the Budgetreceptenkalender. What once started as an idea from a suggestion box has grown into a well-established tradition in Rotterdam. For this anniversary edition, we restyled the familiar design and added a striking detail to the cover: a building with cut-out windows that quite literally offers a glimpse into the kitchen.
The CVD house was conceived as a metaphor for twelve households — one for each month. Behind every “window” lies a recipe, tip or story that helps people cook on a budget. Practical, positive and accessible.
Recipes from the city
The true strength of this calendar lies in its content. CVD collected the recipes together with clients, staff members and partners. From a quick bean soup to a hearty traditional stew: dishes that are achievable, thoughtfully composed and surprisingly delicious. Adding to the special nature of this edition, Mayor Carola Schouten contributed two recipes for the jubilee edition, and TV chef Perry de Man also shared a budget-friendly recipe. Using AI, we carefully visualised each dish into powerful imagery, refining every recipe individually to ensure the perfect balance between atmosphere and recognisability.
More than a calendar
The Budgetreceptenkalender is a tangible expression of what CVD stands for: supporting people in their self-reliance and enabling participation, especially when life becomes challenging. In 2026, more than 8,000 calendars will be distributed throughout Rotterdam, including via the Food Bank, community centres (Huizen van de Wijk) and social organisations. This initiative was made possible in part thanks to the support of the Municipality of Rotterdam, Stichting Nieuw Vaarwater and the Sint Laurensfonds.
For Dex, this is one of those projects that truly resonates. Because it is so much more than a beautiful, tangible communication tool. It is a calendar that makes a difference — on the table and in people’s lives.
